History and Government
Tutor: Leah Simpson
American Government/Economics (11th-12th)
Government teaches how America’s federal, state, and local governments interact with our daily lives. Explore how government affects our every day. Discuss our responsibilities as a citizen. Exploring Government is a one-semester high school course that provides a half-year credit in government. Lessons cover Federal, state, and local government and also contemporary issues in government. Special emphasis is placed on the Biblical basis for government and on the U.S. Constitution. This class covers the governments of the United States, the individual states, and our local communities. As we understand the background, basis, and operation of American government on all levels, we are better equipped to remain prayerful, thoughtful, and involved with regard to government.
Economics One semester course. Emphasis on free enterprise capitalism in a free market economy sets this book apart from the competition. The Biblical views of work, wealth, and stewardship appear throughout the text, helping students to understand the proper economic roles of individual producers and consumers as well as that of the government from a conservative, Christian perspective. The stark contrast between the market economy—the cornerstone of prosperity in the United States—and the command economy—the hallmark of fiscal failure in Communist countries—is graphically presented in illustration of the economic principles that govern all societies. Essential concepts such as competition in the marketplace and private ownership of capital are discussed from a conservative perspective.
Course Pre-requisites: Students should have taken or be currently enrolled in an American or US History course.
$175 per semester/ $350 total/$25 supply fee
Curriculum for Government: Exploring Government by Ray Notgrass
Curriculum for Economics: Economics by Abeka - Student Text

Mystery of History 4 (8th-11th)
Wars of Independence to Modern Times
Earn a partial credit for Modern World History
(Part of the World History HS Requirement - ask tutor for details)
Volume IV, the last and final volume of this world history series, spans three pressure-filled centuries from 1708 to 2014. Starting with Bach and Handel, two of four major composers included in Volume IV, the time period will see numerous “wars of independence.” From the American colonies, the heart of Mexico, the goldmines of Australia, the mountaintops of South America, the shores of Greece, and the walls of the Alamo, we will find mankind desperately striving for liberty and freedom through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Most of the time, he will achieve it – but seldom without heartache, revolution, and bloodshed! ... Now, as violent as parts of this volume will be (and which may require screening for young students), we will take time to meet the artists, inventors, writers, and humanitarians who contributed toward the “soul” of mankind over the last three centuries. And, we will join the missionaries and adventurers who journeyed to inland China, the wilds of Africa, the South Pole, and the gray, speckled surface of the moon.

Etymology (8th-12th)
1st Semester ONLY - Greek Elements Only
Since 1965, Donald Ayers' English Words from Latin and Greek Elements has helped thousands of students to a broader vocabulary by showing them how to recognize classical roots in modern English words. Its second edition, published in 1986, has confirmed that vocabulary is best taught by root, not rote. The importance of learning classical word roots is already acknowledged by vocabulary texts that devote chapters to them. Why a whole book based on this approach? Ayers' text exposes students to a wider range of roots, introduces new English words in context sentences, and reinforces vocabulary through exercises. It promotes more practice with roots so that students learn to use them as tools in their everyday encounters with new words. English Words is written from the standpoint of English; it neither attempts to teach students Latin or Greek nor expects a knowledge of classical languages on the part of instructors. Its success has been demonstrated at both the secondary and college levels, and it can be used effectively with students in remedial or accelerated programs.
